Shifter boot

I bought a new shifter boot for my 52 8N. Does the know on the shifter unscrew or do I have to take that plate off the top of the trans?

Boil it a bit in water and it will go over the knob.

I have two 8ns. one has a solid shifter with small knob on top. the boot will go over it with no problem. The other one has a large black plastic knob which will unscrew to put the boot on.
agree with the boiling water trick. will work good.

I bought a new shifter boot for my 8N. After trying to fit it onto the transmission, unsuccessfully, I did a search on this forum for an answer to my problem. Here is what I learned. The black plastic shift knob does screw off. Mine was new, so I had no problem with that. One poster wrapped the shift knob on his tractor with duct tape and used a strap wrench(oil filter remover) to get the know loose. The next trick is to soak the new shift boot in hot water to make it more pliable. You'll need to do this in order to turn the boot inside out. This isn't as easy as it sounds. What I did was cover the boot with a thin coating of white lithium grease. Then I found a steel shaft that was larger than the smaller hole on the shift boot, and clamped it in a vice. Place the boot on the end of the shaft (small hole end) and work the larger hole end down over the boot turning it inside out. This is pretty tough to do, so what I did, after getting it somewhat started was to use different sizes of 3/4" sockets to force the large hole over the shifter boot. You can use anything of the correct sizes to do this. PCV pipe would work, or even pieces of steel pipe. Anyway, you don't want to turn the boot completely inside out at this point. About 3/4 of the way will be enough. Then remove the boot from the shaft in the vice and place the now almost turned inside out boot on your shift lever. Push it all the way down to the top of the transmission and finish pushing the boot inside out onto the top of the shifter housing. This will give a better seal than just pushing the boot down to the bottom of the shift lever. I hope this all makes sense.

When I replaced the boot on my shift lever, I had no problem at all. I had a pan of boiling water and dropped the boot into it.

I let it boil a minute or so and pulled it out. as soon as it was cool enough to touch, I turned it inside out with just my hands, no trouble at all. I immediately took it out and slid it down over the shift lever. At the bottom, I turned it right side out again.

This with no problem, lube or tools at all. My tractor has to sit outside in the weather so here's a little hint at what I did to protect that new rubber boot from the weather and the sun. Just some PVC pipe with a cap on it and it just slips over the gearshift lever.

i GET'EM FROM tisco A Dennis Carpenter repop part... No problem with fit tho on the loose side around the base that's OK by me...

Tried boiling it torn it trying to get it over the trans cover. Bought a new one a different one this time that seems a bit more pliable and will boil this one and try it. The bottom pic is the first one I bought. Very tight.
Besides this my 8N is running great so I'm happy.

When I bought my MF202, it had these custom made boots on both gear shift levers. Plastic pop bottles and duct tape. :mrgreen:

Yeah, I find it really amazing how cheap some people can be.
