shifter knob removal

My 1210 needs the shifter boots replaced. It has never been done, so I am pretty sure the knobs are rusted onto the shifters. Does anyone have an idea foe removal that won't destroy the knobs?

I'm not aware of any way to get those off without destroying them. If it 8s going to come off it will by using a pipe wrench on the knob, just wrap a thick wrag around it to keep ot from marring too bad. Don't be too surprised if the knob spins on the nut tho.

It will do just that Jon. 3/8 24 thread will be your replacement knob internal thread. I've taken a grinder and cut the knob off from the side. Go slow, and hang on to the grinder. Once the grinding wheel grabs the brass insert ,it may want to jerk out of your hand . Expect the unexpected

I know there are shifter knobs out there you want to save and so i would try a leather strap wrench. even it the threaded insert stays you put thread locker on the knob and reinstall. most times the knobs are generic and very cheap to buy. put the pipe wrench on and twist it off. if insert stays, heat a little and remove with vice grips CAREFULLY on the very end to protect threads. bought my knobs at mcmaster carr.............
