Has anyone ever taking there 656 poor design and had a machine shop make new parts

You could, or you can buy a new cross and pin, i bought about 5 of them and put em in where and when needed,in my tractors.

will the square pin shaft work in the round pin without changing anything except the shaft

The pin i am talking about are round, 2 1/4 long X 7/16 Dia, with internal threaded caps on the ends, with screw driver slots.,and the shaft is 3/4 x1 7/16 with a hole in the center that the pin goes thru, used on the M's super MTA etc.Its what the gear shift lever pivots on. The only thing close to square is the tip on the end of shift lever, thats rectangle that needs to be rebuilt after years of use.

what I was referring to was is it possible to update that shaft to the new style square dowel with changing other parts

Yes, but it has the same problem. After 50 or so years it will wallow itself loose and fall out.

I see my auto complete messed me up to go to the updated pin square will it go in without replacing anything else
