Shifter spring how

41 9n front mount 12 volt conversion. Started repairing took off trans cover shifter ( starter casing broken) bought old new trans cover shifter. Determined spring on both old and replacement were broken. Bought new spring,how do I put it on?

if so.. time to squander a few bucks and buy a service and parts manual.

Thanks, I have both manuals and the ford n restoration book they did not help,however from the diagram how do I get the keeper #4 off or back on, I tried a spreader, busted the Chinese tool

It helps to chuck the shifter in a vise. That frees up your other hand to depress the spring and slide the clip in or out. I made some soft blocks for my vice so it won't scratch finished parts. This is just one of those things that seems impossible until you get it. Then you wonder what the problem was.
