Shifter sticking in R1

I've developed a problem with the gear shift leaver getting stuck in R1 on a '68 2000. I've had the leaver plate off several times now and it appears as if the shift leaver may be moving too far past the dog it pushes to put it in R1, (if that makes any sense to anyone.), and hanging on it. (Catching on the top of the forward dog.) I'm not really a mechanic but was thinking maybe the end of the shifter leaver needs to be built back up to prevent it from going so far. i don't see any way to adjust the leaver down into the "well" any further. (sorry don't know the proper terms for these parts.) Once i re-position the dogs to neutral and reassemble the shifter it works fine until it hangs up again. Anyone experienced this sort of problem and if so what was your fix?

Had same problem on my 3600, so i removed the shifter and welded a bead on to the tip. Then reshaped it back to original with a hand grinder.Doing so added maybe a quarter inch to it. That was 10 years
ago. No problem since. ....John

Don't know how the tractor is used, but I purchased a new shifter plate for my 4100 and it lasted two years. I then rebuilt the old one and it hasn't given anymore problems. I think the new ones may not be as hard.

Sounds like what I had in mind, think I'll try that first, then go to the replacement parts if it doesn't work. Thanks
