shifting a 856

I have a question many here probably would think is pretty dumb but I don't know the answer so here goes. I have a international 856 Ive had for about a year now. Awesome tractor. My question is are you supposed to shift that transmission on the fly? I have to stop it to shift gears up or down. Only thing I don't have to stop for to shift is the torque converter. I had my 50 year old brother in law who has farmed his whole life drive it but he couldn't get it to shift on the fly either, not without some grinding anyway. If I have to stop it to shift then so be it I don't mind, was just curious what is normal for it.. Thank you. Josh

The gears are NOT synchronized, and it is NOT a powershift, so you cannot shift on the fly without using some big-rig techniques. Double clutching, getting the speeds and engine RPMs right, etc.

If the tractor is under a draft load, in other words, doing tillage, it's practically impossible to do a rolling shift because the tractor stops instantly when you push the clutch. However, with a rolling load like a wagon, it can be done with practice.

Also it is called a torque AMPLIFIER, and that is designed to be shifted on the fly without clutching.

Not supposed to "shift on the fly".come to a complete stop to shift.BTW,when you shift the TA,shift hard and fast. To shift slow and easy is a TA killer.Never use the Ta to slow down.throttle and brakes for that.

Well , since they are straight cut gears with no synchronizers and blocking rings they are hard to shift with out grinding, Then ya add in the straight line shifter and no real neutral gate compounds the problem . BUT it can be done if you are and old Fart truck driver use to shifting a CLASH BOX or double clutching and getting the RPM's just wright and the gears all line up along with the MOON ,SUN and STARS . When you live in hill country you learn this . Like when you come out of my one friends lane onto the State highway you are coming up out of a HOLE and at best in third High and you have to stop since not only does his lane set just over the top of a bad curve and hill you have the blind curve that comes out of the trees , You sure are not going to start off in high third even with the T/A in low as most times your lucky to break out in high second with the T/A in low , Now turning to the south you start down hill and you can shift up between playing with the throttle and clutch pedal . Turning to the north makes for a harder pull and usually a turn to the right down the side road that is a Y and here you had best get moving fast because traffic coming off the state route is flying . Having all the adjustments set correctly helps and we can shift them with little to no grinding . BUT your not going to be doing any SPEED SHIFTING . Ya want something that you can shift on the go then buy something with a full power shift .
