Shifting problem

I have a 1953 R John Deere that runs fine. I let is set for a couple of years and for some reason it won't shift into 5th gear. Worked fine before, so don't know what problem is. Any ideas?

Since it worked fine before? I think the shifter pawl or spring might be rusted up. There is a bolt (at least it looks like one from the outside) on the top, right side of the transmission case. It holds the pawl and spring in place...but can also let moisture down the threads and let things rust/gum up.

My 80 looked like this:

</a>

This was part of the reason mine wouldn't go out of gear very well (I had a bent shifter shaft too)

You can remove the bolt, then remove the spring and pawl with a magnet to clean them up. Wouldn't hurt to check and wouldn't take too long either
