Shopping dogs

A discussion below talked about out of control kids in public places. We've all seen them. Another pet peeve of mine is dogs in retail establishments. See them often at TSC, Lowe's and Walmart. The dogs are on leashes and are well mannered, but the do not belong in a store. They can't buy anything. Only thing they can do is take up room in an aisle and leave a deposit on the floor.

I own a dog and I have never taken it anywhere.

And I wish that everyone else would do the same.

i was in rural king last year and alady had a dog on a leash in the food aisle. dog lifted its leg and gave the food a good spiinkle. she said nothing and kept going. i let the manager know what happened.

My Cousin trains Service Dogs. Part of that training is to have them interact with the public in public places. During parts of the training she takes them to all kinds of different stores and shops for different sounds (how will one react to an impact wrench at a tire shop), smells (how will one react to smelling a T bone in the grocery store) or to people in general doing their everyday thing.

Service dogs and ones in training will have different colored harness on to indicate the type of training the dog is going through. Medical (detect seizures for example) or Service for say a blind person.

Service dogs, I do not mind. Just keep that yapping ankle biter at home please..

All depends on the dog and if it is simply a pet or if it is a service animal. Pets do not belong in stores service animals on the other hand do simple as that. A service animal can be there to guide a blind person or to keep a person who has people problems safe etc. There are even service animals that can tell when a person is going into a attack of some sort

Depends on the training. my daughter has panic attacks at times and having the dog with her gives her something to focus on. she realized when she was showing chickens at the fair that when she was carrying one of her chickens she could talk to strangers and not get worried. so the family dog was trained by her and she takes him to her college classes, shopping, movies. in a way it also protects her when she goes out alone to these events, dog has never had an accident and knows when the vest is on he has a job to do.

Wife and I just started watching a show where a woman walks into a cafe with her dog in an unfamiliar town. This is the only animal in the cafe, and this woman supposedly had no reason to know whether this might be allowed one way or the other.

So we had to question, what has started people doing this?

I'm all for service dogs being in public places, including a grocery store IF it's truly necessary. Pets? No way!! Look at kids nowdays and tell me the majority of animal owners will have adequately-trained pets. Ain't gonna happen!

I'm absolutely with Glennster on this one!!

Now, if the store is a plant nursery, I can see a little more leniency. But an enclosed shopping center (including a farm store) should not be allowed unless it's a practice of that particular store.

I was in TSC yesterday and there were two big farm dogs running around loose bumping into the display racks and people, no leash and no visible owners. Finally the presumed owners came walking up the aisle calling to them. Dogs paid absolutely no attention to them.

I've seen several small stores (mostly hardware or farm supply) where the owners had their own pet(s) running around in the store. Sometimes it's fat, friendly cats, sometimes a little rag-mop dog, sometimes a larger dog. It's their store, and they have every right to have their animals in there if they want.

What I have to question is people who will see that, then bring their pets to that (or other) store without even asking. Lots of folks like that out there.

Rural King here just had a day where they had groomers and vet techs to check them over if you wish and there is always a big bowl of dog treats where you walk in, I guess dogs are welcome there? We own dogs but they dont go to the store with us but neither do they bother me in a farm supply store.
Guess we all have free choice as to which businesses we support? Personally I am more irritated by the fat lazy slobs that park in the handicapped spots or right beside the front door than the worst store dog I have ever been around.

This old fuddy-duddy thinks that the only true service dogs are those leading the blind. All other people who need one or think they do should not be out in public or should seek the safety of the nut house. So there!

AMEN Butch, I hate it when someone parks in a handicap zone that doesn't have a placard and I have to sometimes walk long distance. By the time I get into the store I can barely walk to get around because of them.

Some pet stores welcome pets in their stores. It gets interesting when two animals start growling at each other.

I'm surprised we don't hear of dog fights in these stores ? My daughter's dog got in one at a dog park. Lucky they were both there to get it stopped right away. Just wait as soon as someone gets bitten in one of those stores the corporate lawyers will stop it.

I witnessed a big dog grab a little one and shake him like a dish rag in Rural King earlier this year. It happened quick. If the small dog owner had been carrying a pistol, I really believe she would have shot the dog and the dog owner. She was extremely ticked off. Neither dog should have been in the store.

Well the dogs are better behaved than most all the kids and some of the adults so I guess give me a dog to deal with.Personally I wouldn't subject my dogs to a lot of people I
see out in public places.BTW my dogs could buy about anything they wanted as I'd just hand them my credit card at check out.(LOL)

There are two ends to a leash. When my Doberman goes to a store that permits dogs he is in a heel, or sitting or lying. He doesn't approach you unless you ask 1st. I'm on constant guard against other dogs, unsupervised children, crowded aisles, etc.. His presence in a store is a privilege I must not abuse.
I particularly dislike those who send off $25 to get a fake "service dog" badge and then P** in the pond and spoil it for those with integrity and respect for others. <rant over>. <sorry>.

My two Border Collies ride in my truck and travel with me between AZ. and CO. I use to take one or the other into Petco or PetSmart but not anymore, too many unruly and undisciplined animals. Besides too much pee on the floor, don?t want it in my truck. Saw a pit bull snatch a little ankle biter in Petco one time. Pit bull owner blamed the other person for having a yappy dog. I keep my dogs to myself.

We have four dogs, all less than 35 pounds they would love to go every where with us and into stores as well.

But we are not willing to let them into such places as we do not want the vet bills that might result.
I am talking about diseases.
And your dog might be "flea free" before going in but likely be lunch for many by the time you go out.

I trust most dogs more than I do most people....but that doesn't mean I feel I should be able to bring any of mine into a public place! Service animals are completely different, for whatever reason, as long as they, and their owners are properly trained.

Lots of dogs in Rural King and they encourage it. I have never seen a deposit on the floor. the carry out guy told me they do have to clean up after dogs from time to time. I keep telling them at the check out that one of these days I am bring in one of my miniature horses. They say please do!

I use to go to a bait shop close to where I lived and he always had 3 dogs running loose in there. One day my son and I went ion got bait and I was paying the shepard do went over to the candy bar display cocked his leg up and let fly. When we got outside my son said I will never at a candy bar again. I told him just don't buy one from there. You use to have to watch your step in there as there were piles of dog crap all over

Was in our RK last month an a couple had a black and white pygmy billy goat in the shopping cart.

I take Butch in stores that encourage you to bring in your pet, Lowe's rural king TSC and such. He is trained and in training for a therapy dog. He will not go 1 or 2 in a building he will let you know when he has to go. He will not bite man kid or beast....You can beat him pull his tail ears make him cry and some kids have tried their damndest to make him bite and he won't. Yes just as there are rotten kids there are rotten dogs. Just don't lump them all into one catagory or one day you may end up in someone else's catagory.
By the way Butch is a 75 lb German shepherd

Jackson, I agree that Butch will never bite anyone, however, the reality is that the insurance companies know that German Sheperds are one of the more dangerous breeds, and also that 92% of the owners of German Sheperd's that have badly bitten a kid, also knew that their dear dog "would never bite man, kid or beast..."

I set in the car in the sicky parking while Dixie shops. Most of the time over an hour. I see young people park in a sicky spot with a sicky placard or plate and run and giggle going into the store. Also young mothers with small kids jump out and hurry in. They have to be driving a relatives car. I have not observed non placard cars parking in the sicky spaces myself. If there is a closer parking space than a sicky space I take it and leave it empty for others. Manards some times do not have the electric buggies for some reason and I take my wheelchair and most of the time don't park in a sicky space.
