Short run times

Belcain

I have a 1955 850 (gas) that I'm using to help clear some woods right now. It will even push over some of the smaller trees using the bucket :) As I use it for this, I run the tractor for short periods of time maybe 5 - 20 minutes at a time with periods of 10 minutes to hours between startups. I figure its a farm tractor and meant to be run for hours at a time in the field rather than pulling trees etc in the woods but its doing a good job. Is that bad for it in any way?
Should I leave it running rather than turn it off if I think I'll be back on it in a short while?

Thanks for any thoughts on this

Belcain......just as long as it re-starts eazy for you, you can turn it off or leave it running. Don't gitt'chur clothes caught in yer PTO.

Remember, to turn yer under the tank gasvalve OFF at the end of the day. ......Dell

Either way is ok but in the long run if you shut it off when your going to leave it for 30 minutes or more you save gas but if your only going to let it sit 10 minutes it can use as much gas just to restart it

The way those things suck gas, shut it down whenever it's not needed. If it doesn't start well, fix it so it does...
I'll idle a turbo engine if I'm on and off a lot as I like to idle them 3-5 minutes before shutdown, but if I'm leaving it for 1/2 an hour I shut if off. Fuel is too expensive to allow for much idleing.

Shut er down. No harm no foul.

If I am off to do something I expect to be right quick, I leave it running. If I expect it to take longer, I shut it off.

If I'm doing something close to the machine, I shut it off as it's too noisy to be close to.

If it won't start up slick as snot, you probably have an issue that needs to be looked at anyway. These machines normally start up real easy, except when it's cold cold cold. Glad we don't have any of that here in Wisconsin...

Personally, I would let it run for 10 or 15 minutes the first time, just to get it up to temperature and get all of the condensation out of the exhaust to keep it from rusting. Then, as long as it doesn't sit long enough to cool off too much, you should be able to shut it down and restart it over and over without any worries.

I have a 1959 gold 881D. I am looking for the round hood emblem that went on the front of this tractor. I was told it would have said 801 since this was the series. Can anyone help?

like the others said.. I'f I'm only gonna be off a minute or two.. Ileave it idle.. if for a while.. shut er off.

The hood emblem for the 801/901 series did not have any numbers on it. All tractors in the 801/901 series used the same hood emblem and new reproductions can be found at many websites.
