Shredder Question

Hi ya'll. I'm getting ready to buy a shredder for my 8N and need a little advice.

I have 22 acres, mostly coastal bermuda & light brush. So far, I've decided on the Rhino 160 ($1,300.00 locally). How does this compare with the Bush Hog mowers? What's the max weight I need to be aware of? Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks for your help in advance,

Any over around 850 lbs get the front end real light and can cause steering problems. Also any thing bigger then 5 foot is pretty much to big for an 8N

Get some limit chain to take the stress of of the lift. They make bush hogging a lot easier. This site sells them.

I would call that unit an excellent choice for your tractor. The 14,335fpm blade speed will make a nice looking cut & still handle small brush, whereas slower will handle brush/small trees better but grass would look a little shaggy and if you go up to 17,000fpm, grass will look nice, but you have to cut often or it will require more power than the N can provide.

Thanks guys. I went and looked at the Rhino today and it's built pretty strong. Looks like it'll last decades. I'm gonna go ahead and get it this weekend. Late Christmas. :)

I would caution you against buying a Rhino because it was hard to get parts for them for our old Flex 15 shredder. Also, regardless of model, I suggest you get a lighter mower if practicable. At 600 lbs. that shredder will cause your N's hydraulics some strain, and a heavy mower like that is not easy to move around. They tend to dig. I had a heavy type (Mohawk) like that for one year and traded it for a lighter Frontier model. The lighter type cuts all you need and you get closer to the ground with little problems. Finally, I would save the money and get a shear pin. I don't like the slip clutch. Just my two cents.

After you try it and find out it is too heavy for your tractor I will trade you for one that will work better on your little tractor
