Shuttle Shift Tractors ????

One of the things that bugs me when round baling (string wrap - not netwrap) is stopping and waiting on the string to make its way across the bale and back. I don’t like clutching, I don’t like throwing the tractor out of gear and back into gear over and over.

So I have pondered Allis Chalmers tractors with the power director, but what are my other options for a tractor (not a hydro) that can go to neutral via a “shuttle” and make this process go a little easier? Probably 60 hp on the PTO would suffice - a nice AC cool cab would be a plus.

Any recommendations are much appreciated!

Anything with live PTO ,but you will have to hold clutch while tying .

Lot of new tractors have hydro shuttle. Neighbor has a kabota 70 hp. His shuttle is hydro operated. Another neighbor has a 60 hp jd. Operates the same. My cx90 is mechanical. Have to use clutch.

Really all boils down to how much you want to spend. Is it a dedicated baling tractor?

a lot of left hand reverser tractors have a neutral on the shuttle shift. My case does not but others do. I just put my foot on the clutch and wait till tied and dropped and let out when ready. I would like a jd as i think they all have a neutral and forward reverse on the shuttle lever.

I have a CaseIH 5230 MFWD which any more stays hitched to my sprayer. I've thought about selling it. But buying a new sprayer at this point makes no sense. And I couldn't stand being totally without. Anyhow- this 5230 is 4 speed synchronized by 4 speed power shift, with a shuttle lever on the steering column. It's hydraulic, so no dry clutch nor throw out bearing to worry about.

Well, no AC, but a John Deere 730. Just pop the hand clutch back. I baled with one in 79 and 80.

I find by the time you back up 10 or 15 feet stick tractor back in a forward gear it dont take much longer with the clutch in till you are ready to go again, but I only roll a hundred or 2 a year. Pretty easy job compared to the squares. Unless you buy something newish you are going to have a hard time finding a tractor with a shuttle shift that has neautral. Especially one that will stand up. An Oliver reverso- tourqe would do this for you, but I havent seen one yet that didnt have its issues. If you happen to find a good one I doubt it would stand up to much round baling?

My 1850 might be a good candidate. The sprag clutch is bad. Pull it on to under drive and it stops. Push the clutch in when the bale's done, drop it in direct, let out the clutch and go. My luck, it'd decide to grab when I was putting the twine on and the front wheels would come about three feet off the ground.

My MF 451 and that series has a shuttle shift, lever on dash W/ F N R you must use the clutch but tractor does not have to be stopped. They were built in Brasil. Very heavy-made tractors

Our JD 4600 would work great for that, it has F N R shuttle shift, but it's only 37 pto HP! I baled a lot of small squares in the 1960's with a JD R, with the big hand clutch, and live power. Didn't have to stop for tying, bit if I missed the wagon with the kicker I would have to jump off and put the missed bale on top of the next one and kick them both into the wagon. I think I once baled about 800 small squares one day when it dried up early, it was normally too damp to start before noon.

If you time it just right you can let off throttle and shift shuttle into neutral without clutch but you will need to clutch to put it back in forward. At least I can with my cx100.

I'm a big fan of the 5000 series Deere Power Shuttle system (others are likely similar). One item, as mentioned by Bob, is that the tractor no longer has a dry clutch to wear out. One factor, you'll want to think about is do you look for a mechanically activated system (like our 5320), or the electrical systems (like our 5425) Both have their advantages.
