Sickle mower

I'm lookin for an ih sickle mower I prefer a balanced head model. I would use it for a couple road ditches and some hay mowing. What would a good model be? I prefer a pull type in good working condition.

I'd look for a model 100 or an 1100 (newer). You can lay a lot of hay down in a day with a 9 footer but a 7 foot works so much better in road ditches. Lots of 7 foot 100's around for under a grand. If your real lucky they can be had for $500.

Where do you find lots of model 100 mowers at any price? Not in my area and don't think I have seen a single one in my 69 years on this farm.

You didn't say what type of tractor you are using and it definitely makes a difference. I use a 115 mower purchased from our friend from MN. I have had it a few years now and it's here for life. Great mower and worth every penny I have into it. That's a lot of pennys as I had to truck it down here. Needs a tractor with rails like an M or H and it is fairly heavy. Mine is on the SMTA and it stays there year around.

I also have a 120 mower which is a semi mount version. It came off ebay and was $102. It is like new. Nice mower but I really have a dislike for mounting these on the tractor.

Next I have a 100 trailer mower. Paid $85 at a farm auction and it needed paint. Nice and easy, just hook up and go.

I have a brochure that lists a 100 mower in various configurations. Prior to that I was of the belief that they were only trailer mowers and that the 110-115 were midmount, 120 semi mount, and 130 three point. Newer models had an extra zero, I believe.

All from memory, didn't pull out my books. I have a few other mowers around...two JD #5, a new idea trailer, Ford 501, and the belly mower on the Loboy. That's all that comes to mind at the moment.

Thanks, you must have used the mowers longer than here in Ohio. Don't think I ever saw a balanced head mower of any make. All pitman type and most semi mounted, Deere first at 3 times all the others combined followed up by McCormic, Oliver, Coop, Cockshutt and Moline and Massey last. About the only trail type were New Idea or the Oliver-Cockshutt version of what they also painted in Moline colors but none of them sold here.
