sidewinder bush hogs

Anybody with experiance with the tire driven sidewinders ? Are they just for pasture mowing or do they work in heavy brush work. Got some serious brush hogging to do and was thinking maybe less trouble that gearbox style cutters.

I've been useing one for years in about everything i can get the allis 170 to ride down.

Yes they will slip when you get it in really heavy stuff or extra thick, tall grass.

Once the tire gets warmed up, it will do better.

I've got a 3 point gear driven also, but when i get into the really heavy stuff i switch to the drag type and tire driven.

make sure it has oil in it and the bottom seal isnt out.

I have had a couple. If you have the tire aired up good, and the shims under the pillowblock bearings right so the tire is tight against the drive disc, it will cut anything the tractor can drive over or ride down. One of the best cutters made for rough brush work.

i was thinking tire drive = ground drive...never saw one of those sidewinders in person but have seen pix online.

Fabulous machines in rough stuff. I keep one for places I dont want to put my BH batwing. Rocks, stumps, limbs, etc. As others have said, if you can get the tractor over it, it will grind it up. Only problem I've ever had outside of a new time every 10 years or so is breaking the shaft going down to the stump jumper.
