Unless the big hay door is on the other end, one would have to think this barn was built after it became common to use a hay baler. The small door on the left of the loft would allow a elevator to take bales into it.

I wonder if they didn't just close off the big door when they put the tin on it. The pointed end on the roof suggests there may have been a big door there, as the track for the conveyor would have come out on that pointed roof. As you mentioned, the small door is adequate for elevating bales into the loft area.

If you were actually using the barn for hay you would put the elevator door up a lot higher and in the middle. Or the the door is in the other end. My guess is they are just keeping it pretty.

Our neighbors always unloaded in the barn. There was a track in the peak but additions on both ends of the barn. I don't remember if the track ever went out one end so even loose hay may have been unloaded inside. There used to be a high bank barn in the area that had a platform high in the mow where wagons backed in and the loose hay was pitched down into the mow. It was built into the side of steep hill, the wagons backed in 20-30 feet above the mow floor.

Ok I'll bite. That little door on the side is for loading out hay since it would be lower to toss them out on to a wagon or pickup. It might have even had a feeder there that is not there anymore.

Could one suppose the colors shown are intentional? I'd like to think so. (Silo, barn and tarp.)
Could we suppose the folks were "used to" the colors of the silo cap and didn't notice it much? Just joshing you, of course.

Beautiful Hugh Jass barn! That may hold fodder for the Hay Burners (horse/s).
If no hay in the mow, what a man-cave. I used to host wrestling in a similar barn mow. Great fun!

Love those old barns with the dormers in the roof. When it was built it was probably the most ornate barn in the county!

I couldn’t get close enough to confirm, but the staves seem colored and sized smaller than we’re used to. Wish the close up picture would load for me. It shows the pattern and hoops much better. . Shard this one previously. Might you try to post.

Growing up our neighbor had a door in their barn very similar to that in about the same location. We had a small door facing the cow yard on the eve wall opposite the drive in door. Our’s was a bank barn so it didn’t have a big door, but in later years it had another low door facing the farm yard which the elevator went into the conveyor which turned a corner and then down the length of the barn until we added on and then the elevator went into the gable end and conveyed the length of the barn.

Our neighbor was a short man.

Joke of the day for M Python fans: My dog has no nose. Ya, but how does he smell? Awful!
No matter where the door was, we still carried bales around up there.
Remember the vertical elevator right off I-94 east of Sauk Centre that carried the bales straight up and into a small door?

The location doesn’t leave room on the north end. The elevator is 2 auger flights on opposite ends of a vertical cage that elevates the bale once set in the cage. At the top the cage bends the bale onto the barn conveyer.
