Grandpa/Uncles farm when I was a wee one. Thanks again!
 
Mostly the angle. Now if this was taken in one of the Eastern states it's not unusual for the barn and house to be fairly close. The first farm my parents owned in PA, the house was about 70 or so feet from the barn. The second one was pretty close to the same distance, house to milkhouse door.

Agreed.

Also a telephoto lens will compress distances, a subject and the background far behind it will appear to be on top of each other. The first picture seems to have been taken from across a field, so a telephoto lens or setting might have been used.
