Driving in northern Illinois, we saw a barn about the size of your picture today. Meaning normal old barn. What was unusual was the capped tile silo. It was only half as tall as the barn!

Petertay--i worked for a fellow that had a silo like that. Not nearly as high as the barn but had a 6 foot below ground level pit, what a bummer to pitch silage out over your head. GRRR, Gary.

Our old silo pictured was set up pretty well in that the silo went below grade a bit below the stable floor. There was a trap door in line with the ladder boards that you opened up to throw sileage down to stable floor level. Really wasnt that bad of a job, in fact even after we got the unloader it seemed like we were still doing almost as much work keeping it running and chipping off the frozen sileage it would leave around the outside.

The tile silo which was here had a full 8 foot "basement". The silo started at ground/drive floor level. The "basement" started down even with the stable. There was a doorway formed in the concrete so you could pitch out through into a little walkway. That would have been a cluster as the walkway was built for the original square, wooden framed silo. That silo was taken down after they moved aside and built the tile silo and basement. They had started to fill in the original "basement" with field stone. I took the tile silo down and pitched the old dried out corn silage up and out of the "basement". The previous owner had salvaged any good tongue and groove siding from the silo, which I used to build a 14x20 foot door.
