Question for the modern farmers: Why is the grain leg (I think that's the right term, the vertical elevator between the bins) so tall? Doesn't appear to be necessary given the existing bins. I get that some is necessary for gravity flow to the bins but that seems excessive.

Because of those two bins to the right.
Have to have enough angle to get flow to not back up or take excess time.

Makes sense. Didn't think about flow rates. Cheaper to run small pipe steeper than big pipe I imagine.
When we moved the 100 year old granary to Junkshow I did a little reading on grain leg and recall learning that there is optimal angle to the cups and speed that they run as it crests the top to unload correctly.
