Spose it's economics. Back when a new steel roof was around 10K, it was thought it couldn't be afforded.
A big building like that would be golden for storage, workshops etc.

A not uncommon sight here in central NY. Although that's an interesting collection with the road tractor appearing abandoned as well as the barn. I've taken down two barns. One before it fell in, and the other one after. Now I've got a third starting to fall in. So it's a question as to whether it or I last longer! I would have cleaned it up by now but my wife doesn't want to see it go. Now I'm recalling several smaller structures I've cleaned up. Three chicken houses on three different properties. On a neighboring farm I used to rent the owner cleaned up one barn. Now the remaining one is looking pretty rough. On another farm I still rent there's a small collapsed barn. It's too close to others to burn, and they're not going to pay to have it cleaned up. So it is everywhere!
