I presume they sealed between the boards otherwise i would think a lot of spoilage.
The wooden silo I grew up around wasn’t a PH but similar in that it had horizontal redwood T&G staves backed by vertical redwood uprights. It was not sealed or lined. I don’t recall spoilage but some drying around the edge. But these were filled in the cool fall months and fed out through winter. As we got to the bottom there would be more loss due to warming temperatures, but by then the cows were on pasture grass and the silo was almost empty.
We had a silage chipper that was pulled up and powered with a cord. The silage was thrown down by hand. I recall frozen hunks of silage on the north wall but not at the south due to the sun warming it. If there was a mid winter thaw we were sent up to scrape it loose. There was also a pocket axe employed, but not promoted lest we’d damage the staves.

From the sampling I can find online PH was also a T&G stave, but possibly had liner sheets.
