single row corn planters

dumb question.. but just have to ask. I see these single row corn planters for sale that have no fertilizer hopper. What do people do to get fertilizer on their corn, or do they just do without?

If you are like me you have a seperate fertilzer distributor and lay down fertilizer after plants sprout and again at regular intervals.

I hit my corn 3 times with last one being in the heat of the day when stalks will bend and not break under the tractor.

I don"t put any fertilizer on anything and still have a nice crop every yaer. I do rotate crops around every year and only plant a large garden.

Those are intended for gardening. By the time you clean and oil the fertilizer hopper you may as well put the fertilizer down by hand. The better method is to lay off the rows with some sort of plow arrangement, but I have put the fertlizer on top of the row.

if i were doing this i would add a sweep to the tool bar the planter is mounted to opening up a furrow. then i would come back later and add fertlize to the row in this opening left by the sweep and cover it with my feet. fertlize isn't suppose to touch any seeds or be so close it burns new roots. i went by a neighbors house one day and she was trying to put nitrogen on her corn, but was getting more in the top of the stalk that around it. i suggested that she get a funnel and a piece of 1 inch or better pvc pipe, tape it to the funnel and have her grandson walk along beside her and put the fertlize in the funnel as she held it for him. this way she directed it where she wanted it to go and didn't waste any. worked great. another way to put out your fertlize is just to broad cast it. might not be as good that way, but has been done for years in my part of the country. just put it out before planting and mix it into the soil in front of the planter. i would think you could probably buy a two or 4 row planter at a sell cheaper than you can the ones on ebay and make a one row unit for yourself and one or two to sale and still be money ahead.
