six volt starter

How can you check a 6 volt starter to see if it is engageing motor.After several tries to get tractor started it will not turn tractor over.I checked battery it is charged up.Did I over heat starter?

Connect the battery directly to the starter terminal(s) with heavy gage jumper cables. It should be obvious whether it engages.

Starter motors are intermittent duty motors not intended for extended periods of operation. Excessive cranking can and will cause such motors to fail.
