Sleeve problems

I was reading the past thread about the cracked sleeves, and it has me questioning the quality of the kit i recently purchased. Now let me say before i mention their name that i have worked with these guys and had really good service and quality in the past. But this is the first major o/h kit i have ordered from korves(1655 diesel)have any of you used these and what kind of luck have you had.I know alot of problems are caused by poor prep/assembly or inaccurate machining, but before i go and put this thing together i just wanted some opinions.i don't like doing things twice. Thanks and Merry Christmas

When I worked at our local JD dealer, I did some research on different aftermarket suppliers for engine rebuild kits for Olivers(and they also supply many other brands). The three main ones I found were A&I, Howards and Tom's Agri-diesel. The A&I kits were cheaper, and the quality was marginal at best. Howards was more expensive but had clevite bearings and other name-brand parts in their kits. I also thought Tom's kits were as good as Howards and the price was somewhere in the middle. We overhauled our Super88D 6 years ago with a kit from Tom and had zero problems. I have nothing but good things to say about Korves, they have been very good from everything to parts to advice. But if these engine kits are being supplied through A&I I could see that being the cause of some of these sleeve problems that have been mentioned. Another thought, I could not find any M&W sleeves and pistons listed in the A&I catalog, so I would be less skeptical of those kits. I'm not trying to badmouth A&I, its just that they are a major supplier for all brands and their parts are cheaper when compared to the part from Deere or AGCO. But when you put the parts side by side you can tell why its cheaper. It will always have a "made in China" stamped on it and the tolerances are alot sloppier than a part machined in the USA. I'm not an expert, just want you guys to know what I've seen and been told while working behind a parts counter.

I think if I were you, I would call them and express the concerns that you have. It just might shed some light on this subject.

It is interesting to read this thread. I am an A and I dealer. In recent years, I have found that I have to be careful what I get from them. I believe that JD owns it. It has become the Walmart of parts. The quality scares me sometimes. On engine parts, I have stayed with my supplier in Ohio that gets me Sealed Power, Clevite, Fel-Pro etc. when I am into an engine. I have not had guts enough to order engine internals from A and I. A friend swears by Howard.
The lowest price --------Always--------- to me means watch your butt.
I participate in the Farm Bureau discount plan in NY.

In the way the sleeve cracked in the case below think it thru. If the counter bore is clean and true and the sleeve rim sets (down in) square/ flat there in no way under the sun down pressure could crack the sleeve below the rim. The only way it could crack below the rim would be to have side interference, a chunk of something in the counter bore holding one side up or the outside diameter of the sleeve is larger than the diameter of the counter bore. All of which are details to check as you install a sleeve. If the (wet) sleeve can not be turned 360 degrees by hand when set all the way down you have missed a detail.
If you would put the sleeve in a very large press you could flaten the rim to make it thinner and larger around and it would not crack the sleeve.

THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU!! I catch the wrath of God everytime I mention my problem with Deere parts on other forums on here, and the fact that they are discontinuing parts for a lot of the 10 and 20 series tractors, but they can "get" the parts for you from A&I.

I own and operate a repair shop that averages @8 overhauls per year plus counter kit and parts sales, and am a dealer for A&I, Hy-Capacity, Tisco, as well as other brand name engine parts. A&I Oliver kits mostly use Richland sleeve assemblies which is a Wisconsin based company. We have not had any problems with them. TISCO mostly uses Clevite sleeve assemblies and again, no problems. Hy-cap however was using Howards and I have had lots of problems with sleeve breakage, incorrectly machined pistons in direct injected applications, and fight with warranty. I no longer sell their sleeve and pistons. I mostly use Richland, Clevite, or Federal-Mogul(FP Diesel) in Olivers. In Deere applications A&I, Tisco, and Hy-Cap offer Reliance sleeve assemblies, known as the leader in Deere aftermarket kits. You might be suprised what OEM's offer for there kits if they would tell you. OEM Waukesha parts are now known as Arrow Engine, and are high quality and priced high. They are also what you get from AGCO. I don't know where Korves get theirs as I have asked them, but they would not tell me a brand. My 2 cents worth.

What I am finding on broken sleeves, there is no radius cut where the top shoulder meets the side wall of the sleeve. 90 degree corner, cracks and breaks in that corner. Sleeves that don't break, have a radius or a back cut in that corner.

M&W sleeve kits are owned by Alamo Group, and are Distributed through Herschel dealers. Herschel owns the company formerly known as Central Tractor. M&W has droped alot of their older sleeve and piston kits. They are China built, and when compared to original M&W, not even close in quality. We have overhuled S88's with M&W 3-7/8" dome, and 3-3/4" Clevite flats and ran nearly equal HP on the dyno.

Thanks Doug,I think i'll give them a call back and see if i can get more specifics on who mfr's their stuff.Mark said they have had good luck with their kits ....but he is a salesman by trade;-)
