small square baler hay dogs

I was today years old, when I realized that...

The hay dogs on every baler I've ever used were practically worn beyond their useful life.

I was watching the NH small square knotter video and looked at the perfect triangles that new hay dogs should look like...

I've never seen anything like that shape in real life.

I've religiously watched my haydog springs, and they are all good.

But, I have new springs on hay puppies, at best.

For sure that hay dogs don't get the respect that they deserve! Needles, tucker fingers, twine discs, now those are worthwhile problems. No one wants to admit that their baler is failing to tie due to a lowly twine dog. The bill hooks are so much more worthy adversaries. Why, you even have to get down on the ground and crawl underneath to check some of the hay dogs!! Who wants to do that???

Been fighting the knotter on my baler for
years. If hay was long it would generally
tie knots. Short hay or a rebale and they
would miss. Baler mechanic asked how the
hay dogs were. I said I hear them banging
back there. 3 of the 5 had broken springs
or weren't moving right. Got them freed
up and haven't missed a knot in 500
bales. Which is better then the missed
knot every 50 to 100. Never crossed my
mind that hay dogs would be my problem.
