Small square baler opinions?

I am starting to look for another one. I have had a
271 in the past and became very intimate with it. I
dropped it off the ramps on my trailer and pretty
much destroyed it. Long story but it got scrapped. I
only paid $300 for it and used it for 5 years.
Now I am looking for another one for next year. Not
sure what to look for nor really a realistic price for
one. I now have a ?real ? job so I?m wanting
something that is field ready.
Will probably only bale 2000/year so I don?t want to
spend a fortune.

I have a 271 that will bale, and a 271 parts baler. I bale with a 273 now. None of them cost much, but I have not bought one for $300 in a while.

Most any NH baler will be very close to what you already know so look for one of them. I know I'll be pulling my NH271 out of the weeds in the near future for my second cutting of hay

Never saw many 271's but in our area there were lots of 273-275's. Dad had a new 273 and never had any problems with it. He went to a Deere because he liked the bale thrower better. Tom

About the only difference between the 270 and 271 is 270 has a bushing on the plunger rod and 271 has a bearing.
The bushing in my 270 is a little loose, but we only make around 250-300 squares per year.
I keep it greased good and haven't heard it knocking yet.

Agree with others, you should have keep that 271 for parts, a good knotter assembly is worth the price of a baler.

When we went with a thrower Dad wanted either a New Holland or Deere, could not hind either so went with a McCormick. After learning about throwers I am very glad we never found that Deere baler, I never liked designof them and that thrower no way I would want that.

Leroy, my friend got a five year old Deere with thrower five years ago. He had some problems with the thrower but then found out how to maintain it and has no more problems.
