ROSS OWENS

I have a 51' A and at first start up it will smoke blue a little, but at full load like bush hogging it runs as clean as it ever could. After warmed up to operating temp.and idling for a while it will start to smoke and when idled up it will blow a good cloud of blue out and then clear up. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ross

my 70 does the same thing i think my problem lies within the carb at a cold idle i have to run a little choke might be rings too but dont use much oil

I had an early 60 that acted like that. The idle adjustments on the carb were set a bit too rich. Also, I put in a fresh change of straight 30 weight oil and a bottle of Lucas oil additive and that also helped. 30w is specified in the JD operator's manual. Other than that you may be needing an overhaul.

You might look at the flow of oil that is feeding the rocker-arms..
There should not be any stream flowing over the Intake valve stems..can cause what you describe..
I agree, an oil change can do wonders..
If you ever have a head off an "A" and can see that the top ring has over 1/4" of end-gap (common)..you should KNOW it needs rings..!!!

Ron..

Thanks for the replies, I'll check the for oil over the valve stems first,I won't rule out an overhaul but it's just odd that it doesn't do it all the time and never smokes at all under load; hot or cold.

Some say that just changing Brands of oil can cause this...!!!
Is there any more venting than usual from the clutch area..?? (Crankcase venting)..

Ron.
