Smoking to30

Just picked a 54 to30 that smokes. Comp on all 4 cyl is 150lbs. The guy I got it from put new piston rings in it.Comp seems high.Is it possible that oil is getting by the oil ring oer maybe valve guides

Maybe your gauge is wrong, man that does seem high and to have smoke, maybe try some new gas. How long since the overhaul?

The guage I use on my other items and seems to be correct. The rebuild was 2 seasons ago and the guy gave up on it after it smoked. He put a few tanks of gas through it in hopes that the rings would seal.Gas is fresh and carb cleaned with fresh rebuild kit.

What color is the smoke? If it's blue it's oil, white it's water, black it's gas. You may have a water leak into the cylinders or the carb is too rich. What do the plugs look like?

Plugs are black powder looking. They were not wet looking like to much fuel. The smoke is blue and smells like burning oil.

Just maybe it's running to rich i have done the same thing not understanding my problem, i had the main adjustment needle out to far. My 20 did the same thing thinking it's time to rebuild intill i leaned it out some has very little smoke now. As 2tractor knows it takes a Ninja to figure it out.

Straight to the point, oil is diluted by gas. That also will cause it to smoke.
I would pull the plugs and see which one(s) are black with oil.
Now, if the builder did not install the rings up side down, (gee whud' ya think?) I might look at valve stem/guide wobble.
Valves are closed for a comp check, open t allow air in and whatever else.
Gotta go, wife wants the comp

With that high compression pressure, there is probably carbon in the combustion chanbers.
Whe does the engine smoke? If it"s at idle and part power (high manifold vacuum) than I"d expect the valve guides and seals are worn. If it"s at high rpm under load (low manifld vacuum) it"s loss of oil control in the rings.
How long since the rings were replaced? If the cylinders were honed properly the rings should seat in few hours of operation.

I"m assuming it blue oil smoke. if it"s blak then it"s from too rich a mixture setting ot a too high float level.

Come on Bruce how many tractors do you have? Get a comp for your wife then you can play as long as you want. She has her own tractor let her have her own comp. LOL

Boring winter day so I started to tear it down. The was no marking or chanfer on the rings to show right side up. They did look new. I slid one in and there's at least 1/4" end ring gap. When I was sliding the piston out from the bottom they would fall down in the cyl from the top if your wood slipped. The oil ring was worn enough that it would not contact the cyl wall.Going to remove valve and see how the guides look.On the connecting rod bearing it show's 4.00--.030 is that .030 over?

Forgot to add that I ran the tractor for a hlf hour and then pulled the plugs and did another comp test 63lb 78lb 82 lbs 74lbs.Let it sit for a hour and the comp was all over 100lbs. When i pulled the heads the pistons were all full of oil. The intake ports seem dry with no oil residue.

Don't know what the 4.00 is but the.30 is under, lots of people say over.My new rings had no markings that i can remember for up or down, sounds like someone ordered the wrong rings.I'd go to Napa and plasti-guage the rod and mains if it's only been 2 seasons, maybe those aren't wrong too. They should be good to go.
