SMTA Restoration

Well I have bought a SMTA and have finally decided to restore it. The T/A is weak. It just about doesn't work at all. I have a body shop so the metal work and refinishing is no problem. The research that I have done on repairing the T/A looks to be a major ordeal. I have mechanical skills but I'm not a mechanic. Does that make sense? I've rebuilt V8 engines and rebuilt 4bbl carbs and everything that goes with that kind of stuff because when I was a kid, if you wanted to ride, thats what you did. But there are not a lot of Farmalls down south so there are not very many people left who even know what a T/A is around here. Unless I want to take it to the International dealer for $135 per hr. I guess my question is...Should I break this thing in half and try it anyway? Is it that bad? Or should I just paint it up like it is and just not fix it? I won't sell it and probably never use it but I will always know its not complete. What do y'all think?

Well i would fix it right, or not touch it,If it needs a TA it also needs a foot clutch, a pressure plate, and the the flywheel resurfaced. A good supplier on them parts is a Company, out of Iowa called HY- Capacity, Algona Ia. I would say you got the ability to handle it, I do have a Blue Ribbon TA manual, you'r going to need something, the Imp and tractor isn't nearly as good! You can make or borrow some splitting stands, and i am sure you got some blocking! Isn't their a retired IHC mechanic that you know, that could help you ?? How's the engine, compression ?

Fix it. Do it. Go for it. That way you'll walk into the barn and turn on the lights and get a big smile. Well worth it.

I have good news for you. I would be willing
to bet the only thing wrong with TA is the
overrunning clutch. If you take cover off
above torque clutch and then watch it when
the ta isn't working its prabably spinning
backwards real fast. So the ramps and balls
mechanism (overrunning clutch) isn't
working. (There is a TA direct drive clutch
and overrunning clutch) You can split
tractor where chassis bolts together (not by
clutch) and it's easy. Don't mess with the
TA gears if they look good or you'll screw
it up. There's no such thing as a slipping
or weak torque. People that say that or say
TA's are no good are full of sht. Good buy

The work is not hard, but you do need some splitting stands or blocking to support the pieces (if it's a tricycle front I would definitely make a stand to support the front). A hoist is also a good idea to handle the heavy components. None of the work is difficult, but if you just replace the rollers, I can be tricky to reassemble them. I have done it several times and you develop your own methods of holding the rollers back to get it reassembled.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to get a good service manual to use for info when doing the work.

If you OH and do work on cars, you can do a TA. yes,it's a lot of work, but nopt that complicated.Get/make a splitting stand,a good supply of blocks and most importantly,A MANUAL.Read,it,then get after it. Ask questions along the way.Couple of easy weekends should do it.
