Several times in the past, I've wondered about the differences in length from a SMTA versus a regular M. Today I was in a shed with both available so I did some measuring. I know the SMTA is longer to accommodate the TA (Torque Amplifier) so I measured hood and found SMTA hood about 3 to 4 inches longer than M hood. (I didn't measure precisely, just wanted an estimate) The chassis where the TA is located is more than 3 or 4 inches longer than the comparable chassis on a regular M. Measured both gas tank lengths - same. Measured both grill lengths - same.
I was surprised to find the difference is made up by a larger space (some 4 or 5 inches) on the SMTA between gas tank and the vertical post for the steering shaft where on the regular M the gas tank almost touches the vertical post.
No guarantees that this is all precise and correct as I don't know the history of these two tractors as to whether or not their parts are all original from the factory.
Probably way more than anyone wants to know, but I thought it interesting, especially the space difference between gas tanks and vertical steering posts.
