Bull snake or rattlesnake? About 14 inches long. I think it’s a bull snake.

I'm not a herpetologist but the three distinguishing characteristics that I've always believed for rattle snakes are: 1. They have depressions in their heads directly by their eyes. I think that's why they're called "pit vipers", 2. Obviously, they have rattles on the end of their tails, and 3. They are usually short and stout instead of being long and slim. Having said that, you can't be too cautious with any snake.

Pit vipers have perpendicular elliptical eyes, non poisonness have horizontal elliptical eyes. Maybe it is the other way around, regardless, if you can see their eyes you are way too close!

Look at its eyes the poisonous snakes all have a vertical slit instead of a round pupil like people. Pit vipers. The pits are heat sensors. I have read they can detect the heat of a mouse 20 feet away. The only exception to the vertical eye slit pit vipers is the coral snake which is not a pit viper and has round pupils. There is a snake that looks like a coral snake that is harmless. The saying is red touches black friend of jack.(harmless). Red touches yellow kill a fellow.(poisonous)

Pine snakes are still commonly found in east central Wisconsin even though the pine tree forests have long disappeared. We found one at Fort Dix, NJ one time. In pine forested land. Many people mistake them for rattle snakes because of their coloring, size, and they coil up and shake their tail and when it hits something it does make a rattling sound. Their head is relatively small relative to the size of their body. The triangular shape of the head of a pit viper is a dead giveaway. This snake has "hens teeth" but as previously stated, will strike and bite. Neighbor went to step on one and it bit into the toe of his shoe and wouldn't let go.
