None near me but they are known to inhabit the upper Genesee River area, Canisteo River, Cohocton River, and Chemung River areas here in NY. I took hiking for my gym class requirement freshman year of college and was advised to wear a high back boot or shoe due to the possibility of a rattlesnake encounter as the campus was within several miles of the Genesee River.

I have a startled fear of snakes. I will not harm them,,,,,,but I am NOT picking them up & playing with them
In my much younger days there was an 80, lightly wooded, brushy next to a swamp, agricultural crop area.
Lots of deer but also heavily POSTED. Out of area owner. Eventually we met on the property & found an old
small scrap yard & saw the 1st Blue Racer.
The deal was I would clean the mess up for exclusive hunting rights.
The first few moments led to me finding a NEST [that is a pile of big snakes] I soon found MORE NESTS! A quick method was to use a sturdy chunk of stick & beat on the tin. Snakes would scatter in all directions. I was questioning my sanity but being young - no fear.
Most of the critters moved away a few took more convincing.
My Quess there was probably 200.
I lived about 3 miles away & that was my only encounter in that area.
We all survived! I did have bad dreams for a bit.
I still will not handle them.

But WOW what a successful deer hunting grounds for many years.

I had a friend that was bitten, his dog was barking at something in the grass, and he parted the grass to see what it was. He was bitten on the thumb web and nearly lost his hand. We only have one variety in Michigan and it's pretty shy. I have only seen three or four in my lifetime.

There's a guy in our office who built an off-grid house/homestead in the Flint Hills of Kansas south of Emporia. A few years ago he was missing from work for about a week and when he returned he said that he had been in the hospital recovering from a bite from a copperhead. He had been walking around his place wearing flip-flops when he felt a sharp pain in his foot then saw a snake slithering away. Said he blacked out shortly after but fortunately his teenage son was there to take him to the ER.
That is absolutely a gorgeous area! Congratulations to your friend.

No, I do not know of anyone who has been bitten by a poisonous snake. But then where I live there are not any poisonous snakes. However I did work a few places surveying pole lines and staking fiber optic lines in areal were there were plenty of of poisonous snakes. I did wear snake boots the whole time mostly because the company I was contracted with required it.
