soft plug

The soft plug behind the starter rusted out in the center I have tride to chisel it out without no luck. Will the chisel scar the block. Thanks again S.T. PS.47 2n.

Use a socket or anything about size of the plug & drive it into the block, then turn it on its edge and pull it back out.

I just drive a screw driver through the middle and it come out with a little twisting. I assume you are talking about the welsh plug?

Saddltramp......heck, I use an old screwdriver and drive a HOLE into the Welch plug and just popper out. No need to chisel. Those freeze plugs are soft 1-3/16" dia and readily available. I use a 1" socket to set the plug with a hammer (dome-out) some use puckey on the lip of the block, I don't, I just make certain the block lip is clean. simple, eh? .......Dell

No !No! NO! Not on an 8n. The plug seats on a lip inside. You can't drive it through.

That's what I think.

If there is any good metal left, screw a self tapping screw in it, and use a claw hammer, or crow bar to pull it out.

Always learning! Done it many times on other engines, didn't know about that ridge in an N.

Let's revisit this.

I am going to tell ya what, I think, and yall can tell me what yall know.

Normal engine automotive freeze plugs have a flange, sholder around the edge if you will.

N freeze plugs don't, they are more like a 1/2" conduit knockout in an electrical light (octogon 4x4") box, just a concave piece of steel.

That you push in to the ledge, and then hit it in the middle, and it gits bigger, around the edges, when hit.

I may be off my rocker....
