solder stick

As others have said, this may be because your iron is too small/too cold to heat the joint up quickly. It may also be caused by lack of flux. Slobber a little flux on your ends before you insert them into the terminal or after you've made the splice (I use the paste Ruby Fluid from Ace), hold a cleaned, tinned, HOT iron to the joint along with the solder and it'll flow like water. Kinda like sweating pipes: gotta be clean, gotta have plenty of flux, and gotta have enough heat to do the job.
