Solenoid question

I had to replace the 6v solenoid in a 640 Saturday. With the days growing shorter, I really wanted to finish up the project I had going, so headed over to TSC and bought one from the 'land of almost right' off their pegboard display. Hated to do that but they were nearby and had some in stock.

What I was wondering was - can I rebuild my good old "Made in the USA" solenoid? I know these are usually throwaway items, but with the focus on quality electrical parts and the difficulty finding them, I would not mind spending some time on this. Has anybody tried this before?

good luck.

can't hurt to try. go in with the idea that you have nothing to loose.

I have before, drilled out rivits, taken caps off, and dressed or even flipepd copepr contacts and bars, spun contact head bolts 180' to get to better spots.. etc. all depends on how it is put together in there.

i wouldn't be at all surprised if the new ones don't have a bolt shank that can be rotated, nor have contacts that can be dressed easilly.

I have also seen some with crimp or spot weld cans. Those will be harder to take apart. i'm sure with time and patience you COULD though.. all depends on what you want to do...

The 640 uses the same solenoid that was used in 37 to 48 Ford cars and trucks so there should be some NOS parts around. The originals were crimped can style. If the 5/16x24 studs are stripped you can run a 18 thread on them. The condition of the insulator on the battery cable terminal made me change mine.
