Solenoid question

I converted a 640 to 12 volt this weekend with the kit that Just 8N's sells. While I was at it, I figured I should swap out the 6v solenoid for a 12v.

Besides the heavy main posts. the old 6v solenoid only has one small post marked S, but the 12v solenoid has two small posts marked S and I. I connected the wiring up 12v negative per the diagram that came with the kit, with the S post connected to the safety starter switch on the transmission and just left the I post empty.

Trouble is the starter does not turn when I hit the switch. I jumpered the S post to ground and still nothing. When I bypass the solenoid and jump the starter straight off the battery, the tractor atarts and runs fine.

Did I get a bum solenoid, am I installing the wrong solenoid or do I need to wire this differently? I can put the original 6v solenoid back in place.

ep wrong solenoid. For proof, jumper 12v to the S terminal & see if it cranks.

Put your 6v solenoid back on it will work just fine on 12v.

JMOR nailed it for you.
Your push button provides ground to the little wire on the solenoid,
and your new one needs power on that terminal to make it work.
Your old one should work, and that would keep your neutral safety switch in tact which is a good idea.

where'd you get that 12v solenoid? if it's for an auto.. it's 98% chance it's the wrong one.

do as jmor said and see if jumping power to the S makes it start...

There is no need to replace the original solenoid. It will work 6 or 12 positive or negative. It doesn't care.

I bought the 12v solenoid from Just 8N"s when I ordered the conversion kit, so it is not likely an automotive solenoid. Probably works for later Fords.
I was concerned that putting 12v through a 6v solenoid might beat it up, but I can definitely put the old one back in place.
