Someone shot my cat

You've never seen my cat. I have seen her(several times) catch a bird in the air. As high as 6 ft.She is a small cat to boot.
Does that mean you want her shot? My grandmother had a bucket of water waiting for an unwanted cat or dog versus a gun. It got the message across without causing serious harm.

Of coarse not. She is a sweetie. I just meant to say some cats can be tough on birds. Especially when the dive bomb her.I also realize that if she leaves the place, she might not return. That's just cats.

A lot of people think coyotes, possoms, squirrels, wood chucks, skunks, racoons, moles, chipmunks, mice, prarrie dogs, gophers and rats are just varmints and have no qualms about killing them.
They also hunt pheasants, ducks, geese, bear, deer, elk and moose.
There are also still at lot of people who trap muskrats, mink, beavers, fox, otters and other critters.
And people don't give any of that a second thought.
But if it's a cat...
Virtually all the animals you list do not adapt as pets. For me killing would be a last resort and would have to be humane. Trapping for better or worse has been on the decline for quite a long time now. As I said down below there is an "in between" as far as shooting a cat or dog and doing nothing. My grandmother had a bucket of water waiting for an unwanted guest and I know of others who had a garden hose on standby. It nearly always got the message across to the animal without serious harm. Most people I know who would shoot a cat or dog have serious emotional issues and are taking some kind of personal frustration out on an animal that lacks understanding in that regard. It was not that many years ago where people would have the same regard for a person especially in the days when the law got around via a horse. Not unheard of to burn somebody in their house. Very sad.

For all your love of pets, they are not people. So your comment above is a false equivalence.

"Most people I know who would shoot a cat or dog have serious emotional issues"

One could also question the emotional state of those who refuse to accept their beloved cats can be an annoyance.
They say "But it is a cat and it does what cats invariably do".
As if that absolves the cat and the owner of any fault.

I think the answer to this conundrum is for owners to keep their cats on their own property.
How they do that I don't know.
But that is the only answer and ridiculing people who don't like cats or implying they are cat killers with "emotional issues" is not the answer.

BRAVO!

95% free roaming dogs have no collar. That make's it hard to hold owner responsible for them. 95% of dogs in pounds and shelters weigh over 50 pounds and majority are pit bull mix .

She must of had impeccable timing and a great arm to hit a dog or cat at 50 yards with a bucket of water.

NY986 Jerry Clower's Granny throwed water on mischievous boys. According to Jerry his granny cooked lunch and kept kids while their parents worked the fields. One day as she finished a churn of ice cream she heard boys from down the road pestering toddlers she had napping on back porch. Granny opened back door and dumped ice water from freezer onto the boys who took off toward home bawling. Shortly the boys' mother was on Granny's porch asking why she threw ice water on her boys. Granny replied "simply because I didn't have any handy that was scalding hot".

You can let it run outside. Had one get caught by the haybine, found it in the barn with one leg hanging on my a piece of skin and half of one of her front paws sliced off. Vet got her fixed up and when she healed she went back out to the barn. Within an hour she had caught a bird.....

i was driving down the highway last Saturday morning in an industrial area and there was a small kitten laying in the middle of the other lane. I pulled over and as I did it moved into my lane and laid down. I picked it up and took it home. Looks like it was just old enough to be weaned. Don't know if it was dumped or wild but I'd think if someone was going to dump one it would be in a residential area. With 5 cats and 1 dog already we didn't need another one along with the vet bills that goes with it but I couldn't leave it and can't take it to the pound. Guess it was just fate that we were on the highway at the same time.

Nobody said anything about 50 yards. The animals would bother her flower bed which was within reach of the bucket or hose.

Sad that you can report that but it will not do any good but that is the sad state of the legal system in this area. I have to tell the neighbor at times to slow down as they drive past my house due the the cats I have and even had a guy spin out and throw gravel in my face right in front of my horse barn. If the truck he was in had a back plate on it I would have taken the numbers down and filed charge but no back plate so not able to do so
I thought you had a mile long driveway.

As promised, an update on the willfully injured cat. Fully recovered, albeit with three legs. Getting around quite well, and integrating satisfactorily with the two other indoor cats and the two Blue Healers. zuhnc
I am very glad the cat recovered. Perhaps the person who shot it never intended to kill the animal, just to chase it away (which worked).

To avoid unfortunate things like this in the future please consider putting bright collars with your address on any outdoor animals, so other people can easily see they are someone's well cared for pet rather than a neglected stray.

Good on zuhnc for reviving the post and letting everyone know how things turned out 2 months later. No matter how you feel about wandering cats, this is a post revival that makes sense and for those that were left wondering. It finishes things up nicely..

I am in no way in favor of wounding animals but I'm GUESSING she may have wandered somewhere she was not appreciated, and it probably wasn't the first time.

You say she will be an "indoor cat" now, perhaps she should have been before?

Unless she was shot ON your property, some one may have been dealing with a "nuisance" on THEIR property.

There's no reason a "neighbor" should have to put up with the filth and STENCH left behind by someone else's cats.
True. We don't have any cats right now, but a few years ago we had two outdoor cats who would come into our garage through a pet door to eat and sleep. Several cats we knew belonged to a neighbor also found the pet door and cat food. We constantly had to chase them out.

Now, we haven't had a cat for a year and a half, and those very same neighbor's cats still sneak into our garage thinking they'll find a free meal.

I'll probably catch a lot of "incoming" for saying this, but this cat probably simply made too much of a constant nuisance of herself to the wrong person.
