You will need to split the tractor.I have one in the shop right now that we are putting a new shift cable in. Get the book as you will have to adjust it when it is done. Check the PTO clutches when you are in there as now would be a good time to replace them also.

As near as I read the Ford Manual on this tractor, replacing the shift cable is a job that can be done with the transmission in the tractor. Looking at my 5000, I don't see why that isn't true. Why do you think you need to split the tractor to replace the cable?

Upper cable and wheel can be replaced from outside. Inner is a little harder to do.
