I'm sure it's in here somewhere with digging . But I'll ask the experts anyway. I have a '62 671 new to me. We changed the transmission fluid and cleaned the screen. I know we have to do the filter under the cover yet. My issue is I can start it and let it warm up and start moving no problems. This is until I shift into 5th gear. It just barely creeps in any forward and reverse gear. 3rd and 4th will creep it forward and R1 back. But I get about nothing out of the rest of the gears. After 5-10 minutes of shifting back and forth it runs like nothing is wrong. Rpm doesn't seem to matter. Today it came back at idle. The last time was about 1200 rpm. Where do I start troubleshooting for this? Thanks in advance for any help. Yes, I do have the manuals on hand. That was first priority.

I'd start with pressure testing. Since you say that you have the manuals for it, my next piece of advice is to start reading.

Heads up on the new filter. Be patient with inserting the inlet and outlet tube into the filter. You may have to ream out the filter inlet/outlet and/or sand down the tubes a little to get them to fit without buggering up the filter.

So update. I was able to get a gauge to check the pressure, now I need the time. I was able to pull a small tree out with it. The transmission was acting up like normal, but I did notice something. If it was acting up and I turned the tractor off and started it back up it worked fine. For at least a little bit and finally stayed running well after the third time of doing that. I plan on having time later this week to do things to it. Has anyone else noticed anything like this before?

The oil I put back in it was vp ultra j20a. The oil that came out was pretty dark colored, the screen filter was pretty well plugged with gunk and.overfilled by just over a gallon. No silver from metal came out. I have it but yet to pop the top cover and change the internal filter. The old guy I bought it from said he had the tractor for 6 years and only started it up and brush hogged with it, never changed anything but put gas and top the oil off if it needed.

Rather than having us speculate from a thousand miles away, how about you just put some pressure gauges on it and post back when you have some numbers we can digest.
