SOS will not shift

DPM NY

New User
Picked up a no running 800 series with a sos transmission. Tractor is running and the hydraulics work, pto spins and the 3 point works as well. Checked the trans oil level and that is ok although the oil needs to be changed (it's milky). The shifter will not budge. Removed the shifter from the cable behind the dash and it moves freely. Can anyone make a suggestion on what the problem may be? Thank you, Dave

you need to get a shop service manual for that 801 ( not 800 ) series 871 or 881 tractor you have before you go much farther. ps.. i'd be prepaired to do an oil 'flush' and change to get rid of the emulsion.. utf meeting m2c134 specs will be needed for this. but don't go run off and do that jst yet untill you hear more info from a SOS person.. of which there are many familiar witht hat full powershift tranny here in this forum.

Get a proper service manual.

DO NOT attempt to remove the transmission top cover unless and until you have read and understood the R & R procedure.

Dave, as the guy,s have said here, get the proper manual first, then go easy to trace the problem. Parts are pricey, plus hard to find. Sounds like water contamination in the fluid. If it sat with water in it the control valve assembly could be stuck. Also the shift cable may be corroded inside the sleeve tube. Either way the top cover will need to be removed. It's not to difficult but needs to be done in a sequence E xactly as the manual directs. PTO turning is a good sign. Perhaps Larry Nicks and or Ultradog will chime in. They are very knowledgable on that trans.

How did you "remove the shifter from the cable behind the dash"?
What moves freely now- the shifter handle or the cable going into the transmission?

Let me clarify: I removed the entire shifter assembly from the dash, but did not actually disconnect the cable. I removed the cable sleeve to check for rust and found none. I was able to get the shifter to move freely, and it seems that what ever is preventing the cable from moving freely is coming from the tranny itself.

DO NOT force it.

Acquire a proper S-O-S service manual, read the top cover R & R procedures, remove the top cover and inspect.

it might be best to supply the Numbers on your trans to deturmin if it's an ORC or DDC for proper manual. Things get switched out all the times on these old tractors.
