Saw your previous post about GC's in trouble. I'm
guessing thats general contractors? And if you don't mind me asking, what engineering disipline are you in? Reason I ask is my youngest has about a year left at U of Alabama in chemical engineering. No one knocking down the door trying to hire him yet.

And good luck with the thumb. I tripped on a toesack while putting a osb ceiling in my shop a couple weeks ago and tore up my right knee. It's better but I don't heal as fast as I used to.

Hello David,

It's been my experience that a diploma on the wall absolutely opens doors for employment. I'm not sure what the ChemE market is like right now, but with more and more petroleum being burned each day, I would assume demand for new ChemE grads would be ok. Before anyone takes offense, I will add there are pleny of college grads (engineering and other) that can't tie their shoe. Common sense and experience goes a long way in this world, but it doesn't open as many doors.

The main thing his diploma will provide is proof he worked hard and stayed the course to succeed, is trainable and can learn. Maybe ChemEs use more of their college material in the real world, but my experience with Civil engineering is they teach you what they need to when they hire/train you. Most of the book stuff in college was concepts, principles and understanding how to solve a problem, [u:ee1557d889]any[/u:ee1557d889] problem (logic).

I wish your son the best of luck. You may suggest he keep an open mind when he does consider which jobs to apply for/accept. It's a big world out there and his diploma will open many doors outside of the ChemE realm is he so desires.

civil engineering by day, sound engineering by night ( started college as EE, veered of to CE before graduating.. all the SE stuf is EE stuff I already knew.. etc.. )

As a chemEng, I doubt he will have a hard time getting a job.

CE's and for the most part.. EE's are a dime a dozen here in florida... all my eng'ing buddies had to move outof state to get employment. not possible for me to move at this point in my life... so.. future is cloudy as yoda would say... and yeah.. GC = general contractor

Stopped in to chat w/ wifey at hotel job. Had talk with Jax GC down with his crew in area. Complained that running all over FL to keep part of crew busy, had to lay-off rest. City of Jax just whacked 21 positions in permit office last week, no work and no income from builders. Got his card for ya anyway Chris. Maybe if you need. Keeping fingers crossed for ya. If you get busy again, maybe my RE comes back and can quit my crappy day job, but not until then!
