hi everyone,
did an engine job on my oliver diesel 1650 and decided to replace the engine mount bolts with new ones. come to find out that two of them, right rear and front left aren't just bolts. they were dowel bolts that align the engine. don't know what i did with the original bolts so i tried using a 9/16 bolt and it is just a hair too big. i guess this is critical because the oliver started to shake under a load and i guess its because the dowel bolt are not in. can't find any through the antique tractor parts sites, so any ideas?
thanks

Try McMaster-Carr. Search for shoulder bolt or shoulder screw. Why do you need to replace them?
Dowel bolts are made different than shoulder bolts.

Just an idea.. Could a good quality bolt that fits be turned on a lathe to form the dowel?

probably need to go to a tractor wreaker. Or try the dealer .or keep hunting the shop. plus the chain sprockets must be lined up, up and down perfectly or she gonna shake, not only from the sideways adjustment.

OP is on the Oliver Forum here, says he found bolts.

well thats mighty nice of him , a few days ago... that would be tuesday the same day he is posting here looking for bolts. 🤷‍♂️🤔 we spend time helping but kinda rude being a mushroom.

There u go same as above , the shoulder is bigger. Do u want me to remove one and measure the difference for you between the bolt and shoulder bolt.

????
Please explain so I can understand what you're saying.
I think the OP used incorrect terminology. From what I am understanding is the “shank” or non threaded part of the original bolts are a bit larger diameter to allow more positive alignment rather than having some clearance for easier assembly like most “bolt fit” specs allow. His use of “dowel” was a description “acts like a dowel” more than a correct technical name.

There must also be some sort of ‘shoulder pin’ that would be headless, maybe have 2 flats or an Allen head in the end? Gleaner combines use them for the sheaves for example.

There are so many interesting bolts used in special cases, it’s interesting to learn about them and while I will forget over time, to learn their proper name.
