spilt rims

I have a old 68 chevy c 50 with a dump body....we use it as a silage truck. It has split rims on it. 7.5X20. The thing is here in Vermont you can't get an inspection sticker with split rims ..... something about safety. Is there anyway to get drop center wheels that would fit a c-50 ??? If so who sells them.

Yes they make new replacement rims for them. Any good tire place or truck salvage yard should have them or be able to get them

Are you sure you actually have split rims? The original style split rims had been obsoleted before your truck was built. There is a new (1960s?) modification to the design. I have heard it called a 'safety ring' or 'lock ring'. The concept is the same, but the new style doesn't come apart in use.

Here in NY, the 'split rims' are illegal to use on the road and shops cannot legally work on them. The other style is still very much in use. The link below is for a military/ civilian jeep rims that explains a little more about it. An inexperienced shop may not know the difference.

You should be able to find 22.5" tubeless wheels to fit your truck.

Depending on the type of wheel you have it can be easy or more work. I don't recall ever seeing a GM product using Dayton wheels. They are the type that bolt on spokes with wedges. If you have that type just buy the new 22.5 rims, probably used and your in business. If you don't have them then buy the rims anyhow and take the centers out of your rims and have them welded into the 22.5 Dayton rims and your in business.

When he says split rims he is talking about the lock ring rims. The lock rims are also not allowed by the Federal Government For new vehicles since the late 70's

Thanks for the clarification, many people are not aware of the difference. I was not until I began looking at some military surplus M35s. In any case, his '68 C50 should still be passable with the original rims.
