spliting a Ford 600 tractor

If you have a repair manual read it and read it again. Also mark everything you take apart etc, Most important part think safey. And if along the way if you are not sure ask again. Good luck. Have fun with it and take your time.

Which needs repair, engine or transmission? If it's the trans, you don't have to remove any sheetmetal. If it's the engine, just strip away everything around it.

cut you some wood wedges and drive then into the axle supports at the front.. otherwise the engine will flop over ont he axle kingpin.

use wood cribbing or jack stands to support weight.. not jacks or hollow cell concrete blocks. ( solid pillow blocks are accebtable if you have nothing else.. but I'd still put a piece of plywood on them to keet them from splitting.

if on a hard even surface, you can use a floor jack to help roll one section away from another... if on the grass/dirt.. put down a piece of plywood.. it will help immensly.. and remember.. if you are doing clutch work, the trans input shaft is a built in alignment tool.. remember to change the 3$ input shaft seal if you got it split at the front as well.. good cheap insurance. and if clutch is mor ethan half gone.. just bite the bullet and do it as well as inspect the ring gear on the flywheel.

The engine must be supported so that it will not rotate around the front axel pin when the trans is separated from it. Some folks jam wood wedges in the front boltser to keep the engine from flopping over. I like gadgets, so I made a couple that help do the job safely. One is a bracket that bolts to the front axle and attaches to one of the bolster studs. The other is a cradle that supports the engine and allows the flywheel end to be raised or lowered for alignment during separation and reattachment.

The first time I split my 641 I was a bit nervous about it. Turned out splitting it on dirt...realized after the fact that having plywood would have been nice...and had to try to shove plywood underneath the engine hoist when trying to get things together. The second time I split it I drove it into the garage...that went SO much better, and cleaner.

Like another person said, the FO-20 manual gives very good instructions for splitting. Took me 3 hours to split the first time I did it (had never done anything like that before). The second time I had it split in just about an hour.

When restoring my tricycle front end 960 tractor, I supported under the trans case with a jack stand, and removed the front end, then the side rails(which gave easy access to the engine mount bolts), then removed the engine with an engine hoist. I made a cover for the opening in the bell housing from hard board. I put some 6 mil plastic over the hole to act as a gasket and then the hardboard cover that I had cut in the shape of the opening with a jig saw. then I reinstalled the rails and front end, so it could roll around again. The gasket-ed cover is to protect the opening while the tractor was sand blasted, and it did it"s job. You can see some splitting pics and how I did the gasket if your scroll through the restoration pics in my picture page.

Joe,

Check out Jim's photo journal which you can link to from this post:

I think his pictures should be able to answer any of your questions on splitting your 600.
