Splitting 9n

Neighbor has a 1939 9n that had the starter bind up on the ring gear. Long story short is that it ate up about 6 teeth in a row and the ring gear needs replacing. Thing is neither of us has split a tractor but it looks straight forward. So once split, (besides ring gear), what should we check or replace while in there? Seals, bearings? Also, should we replace the starter or just the assembly with the gear that slides onto the shaft? How does one check the clutch? or should we buy a kit for it regardless? Thoughts?

I'd check out the pilot and throw-out bearing.
Hobo has a quick little bit about adj the clutch at his website below.
Hope this helps.

Clutch Adjustments

One more thing I'd replace is the input shaft seal esp if it's leaking alot of oil from that little cotter pin underneath... :)

ok theres not a really good way to check the clutch but check the throw out bearing and stuff why u got it apart just to be on the safe side check the fingers on the pressure plate for wear if there's alot then get a new assembly it will save alot of headache in the long run. also that can demonstrate that u may have an clutch issue. but if he doesnt ride the clutch and it seemed to be working fine when u tare into it then my guess he'll never ware it out.

If you are going to split the thing, clean the heck out of it, replace the trans. seal, replace the worn out ring gear AND for the money replace the clutch (likley you will never have to do it again). Don't forget to clean the 'weep' hole and install large cotter key in same. HTH
