Splitting a 49 8N question

Hi all,

About to do my first split on my 8N to replace the clutch. I have almost everything ready to accomplish the split, but for the bolts around the tranny housing.

My question is this... is the purpose of using a hoist through the steering wheel only to keep the back end from falling down? Or does it need to be lifted to disengage something?

I have spent quite a while searching this and I have the FO-4 manual. I must be experiencing mad cow or some other mental disease as I am not sure what this is saying. The FO4 says it will "raise the steering gear until clear of the transmission housing." Do I need to remove the bolts at the base of the steering column?

I must be missing something.

Thanks for any help.

Well...there are two ways to skin a cat.

But what I would do is support the engine with heavy cribbing(4x4 or 6x6). Put my floor jack behind the bell housing and roll the rear end out of the way.

Nothing needs to clear. Just pull them apart.

Do a COMPLETE clutch job with both bearings, pressure plate and clutch. Change the trans input shaft seal while your in there. Beats splitting it twice.

Don't forget to put some wood wedges to keep the front wheels from turning. I made some from a two four and drove them betwee the axle and steering arm.

The FO4 manual probably is having you leave the steering rods attached to the steering sector arms. Notice the photo in R Geiger's reply shows the tie rods removed, which I believe is the easiest way to do it.

If you leave the steering arms attached, you have to unbolt the steering gear from the transmission and support it in position while you roll the rear half of the tractor away.

Thanks guys. It took about three hours from the start to achieve separation. Came apart very nicely. And how I imagined it would. Yes, the pressure plate was stuck on the flywheel.

Looks like a parts order is in my short term future.

This is a great board. Thanks to everyone who contributes to it.

You mean clutch stuck to flywheel or pressure plate to clutch, right?

Not bad for a first spilt.

Bet the hood took the longest.

Keep us posted and ask questions when you get stuck. The N board IS awesome.

JcinKY, thanks for your suggestion, but I can't find a
transmission input shaft seal. Do you appen to have a part
number for this? I am ready to order parts and would like to
get it all at once.

Thanks.
