Splitting my 960

Have a question about the side rails/frame running along side the engine . Do most people just support the engine and let these hang at the rear of the engine after split or do they try to support these along with the engine? Anything I'm not thinking about?

Gotta clutch to replace

You have to keep the narrow front end/engine assembly from falling over. Here's what I do.

Luckily, I have a wide front but I see why you did what
you did. Smart idea and design!

I also did noticed that you put some block support
underneath the side rails. That's what I'm asking
about.

Thanks for the reply

Hi DHW

Wide front end is good but you still have the centre pivot point of the front wide axle under the front bolster. Be sure and put a wedge in each side so it won't tip. Not fun. Hope all goes well.

I blocked under the rails. As with any tractor you block under the front and roll the rear. Even with wedges the front is not stable enough to roll. Use a HoboNC trailer jack with wheel to support and roll the rear.

side rails don't need any particular support. I use blocking and wedges under the oil pan to support the engine at the proper level to avoid any misalignment.

If you have a wide front end you must have a 961 as the front pedestal was changed from the early design so to allow the wide front mechanism.

you may want to consider changing the ring gear while you have things apart. Inspect and look for an area where the gear is starting to wear. It doesn't cost that much and might save another split later. Also inspect the bolts holding the clutch to the flywheel carefully. I have seen them stretched and needing replacement.

Thanks for all the responses guys! I'll heed everyone's advise here. Thanks Matt from Oz for reminding me to wedge that section you mention.

Giving a pic of my front end of my 960. I posted a few weeks back that If you have tie rods (original) that need to be replaced, I found some tie rods used for AC front ends. Good fit and right taper on the ball joint. They work!
