Splitting tractor - what to replace?

Hi all,

I'm planning on splitting my british made IH 444 tractor to replace/un-sieze my PTO clutch. What are the usual things one would replace when the tractor is split? I want to try and make a list pre-split, as since i'm in New Zealand, i'll likely have to get some parts shipped from the UK/USA. I'll have to assess the condition once I get a look inside, but so far everything looks dry when looking through the inspection plate.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Messicks 444 listing
There are multiple optional systems and configurations of PTO systems in that series of tractor. The link I am supplying is to the Powertrain section of 444 tractors from Messicks Inc. The site has the most complete listings of part numbers for IHC.
My best suggestion is to replace all friction material (driven discs) the pressure plate, the throwout bearing/s, the pilot bearing in the flywheel, and possibly the tubular drive shaft for the hydraulic (if equipped, the splines can wear and eventually fail) Jim

It amazes me that people ask this question before the tractor is split. You need to split the tractor then go through it to see what needs replacing. Pressure plate may be good , it may not be good. Same with flywheel which might need a resurface. Same with release brg. And pilot brg. Then look at rear seal. Check the spline on trans. Least that’s the way I do it. I Never order a pile of parts till I have my eyes on what it needs. Just like this morning. Hear one spindle on the lawn mower growling. Tear it apart and the brg is dry. Remove the dust seals and pack it with grease and get it together and keep cutting grass for a few hrs. Brgs go because of lack of grease, that simple. A new spindle is about 100 Dollars , so I didn’t have to dish that out. It’s experience , maintenance , that saves a person money.

Tubular drive shaft for the hydraulic???
Can you explain?
The numerous optional PTO systems and drives, as well as Hydraulic systems typical of later IH tractors precludes me from explaining much Taking it apart might be the only way to get it right. If the tractor has live hydraulics, and the pump is in the transmission, there will be a drive shaft in the clutch area to drive it. Jim

When I worked at main IH from 1976 -80 all the 444’s I saw were dual clutch with hydraulic pump driven from timing gears at front of engine

Would consider the starter ring gear. The one on my 2424 had been bad for 30 yrs until I finally had it split and replaced, Turned out the guy was able to flip it over and use the other side, so I did not even have a parts cost.
