Spool Valve Seals

Hi everyone,

The last of the Davis 185 backhoe external leaks is coming from my spool valve.

Is it possible to replace the seals (#18 in diagram) without taking it apart?

Thanks,
Don

properly done it has to be disassembled. don't want to risk scratching the spools that way spools can be inspected.

The valve is about 65 years old and I am concerned that I will open up a can of worms without parts available to fix it.

If those seals will pass over the little clevis, I wouldn't think twice about replacing them without disassembling the valve.

Looks like, if the clevises have to come off there's O-rings involved?

Hello to all,
Is there anyone out there that is still using a 185 davis backhoe attachment? . If so are the seal in the spool valve hard to find and replace . Thanks in advance.

I have no direct knowledge of this valve.

Typically the spool (part #A) and valve body (8) are precision ground. This very tight tolerance is too small too allow the hydraulic fluid to pass by and leak. The lip seals (18) mainly keep dirt and water from destroying the bore and spool. If the valve is weeping, such as life. If it's leaking, it needs to be replaced.

Thank for the reply ! Just looking around for others that have this backhoe attachment and are still using. Because I picked one up about a year ago and I am in the process or trying to hook up to a tractor with some mods . And just was wondering how they work as for digging and such . Thanks for the info. PS mine needs a bunch of work but like the project and challenge.
