Spreading straw

Hi all, I have a 1970s combine which has no straw chopper and it is very hard to find a straw chopper for said combine. We chop all of our straw, but for me to be able to get the rows of straw into our stalk chopper I need to spread the rows out. The combine has a 14 foot head so the rows don't need to be spread to far. If you could share your ideas that would be much appreciated.

You can run the rows through a forage harvester or forage crop chopper that used to be used for Zero grazing. Lots of these old units out there, and they don’t bring much money. If the discharge hood is aimed straight up, it will disappear into the stubble very well.

What Bruce said is about the easiest method. Just use a piece of sheet steel to deflect it back a bit or a lot will land on you or the cab when going down wind. We used to use the old McKee chopper for that with hay that got rained on so much it was just s rotted mess so off with the pipe and away we went.

Make and model of combine ? A lot of them combines had a spreader also.

Is the make and model of your combine top secret??? You will get better answers if you provide pertinent information.

2-star tedder.

Thank you everyone for that, yes I have thought of a tedder, but was unsure of how far it would spread it. My combine is a 1977 laverda m112, which I bet none of you Americans have ever heard of. It's the only one in new zealand. Here in new zealand I have struggled to find any really cheap forage harvesters. My other idea was a side delivery rake lifted right up to just take the top of the row.

Yes some laverda m112s had spreaders, but I can't find any for sale and even if I did shipping would be too expensive.

Oh no, they sell straw spreaders for those at every Walmart over here in the States, LOL

A star type tedder would spread it out the width of the tedder. Thinking about it more, a 4-star would spread it out to about the width of your header.
