Spring Itch

Me and Eleanor haven't spent any quality time together since October. She's still got a good 2 feet of snow around her and 20 yards of unplowed road between her and freedom.

Things are getting so bad I'm afraid I might do something rash. Such as purchase either (or maybe both) a '52 8N or it's companion - a very clean looking 5 speed 600 - that have been sitting in town for the past couple of months.

Probably won't though. Last year the last snow storm was mid-May. Is there hope yet for green grass, black earth, and the sound of a Ford pulling to her heart's content?

Cabin fever, anyone?

N abstinence blues aside, had a lovely weekend celebrating my wife's 29th b-day, as well as my father's 60th. We spent the day with my folks, grandmother, and my uncle and his family.

I spent almost 2 hours on my N plowing snow this past weekend myself. Its a job that normally only takes 45 min, but once I was on it, I thought I would do an extra specially good job and make the driveway a bit larger. Picture this if you will. 6" of fresh snow from the day before, the sun is shining brightly and its about 20 degrees. I'm on my N driving around "working", my 1 year old daughter and 3 year old son are in the house and have thier noses pressed against the window watching the old man "work", and my wife is standing behind them just shaking her head, wondering just how much more snow I'm going to clear. It was a good moment. My wife now calls me Oliver after the main character in the show "Green Acres".

Yep, I'm ready to get outside. A couple more dry days & I'll plant English peas. Probably some Sugar Snap peas as well. I'll be going to the co-op Thursday for seed potatoes; they'll go in around St Patrick's Day. I started some artichokes in pots inside today. My "real" farmer neighbor grows all of my tomatoes/peppers etc in his greenhouses; they were planted last week.

I'm all but finished the kitchen remodeling project; it started in early December. Once I get the crown molding on the cabinet over the fireplace, I'm done. Well, as you married guys know.....I think I'll be done!

yeah, um ok, I was enjoying NOT having to switch the bale forks and backblade EVERYDAY because of the constant snowfall around here... a couple weeks of little accumulation was nice...then Sunday morning 8" of HEAVY wet snow... Doing a great job scraping that off when "SPROING" went my main support of the blade *frown* I guess I didn't see the frozen bank under the new snow...Yes Virginia, there is such a thing as too much traction...nearly got "unseated" out the back door! Any one got a 7' blade in SW Michigan for sale?

I mowed and plowed Sunday in preparation for planting corn. (yea, I know it's too early, I'll have to disc it in next month again) It was a beautiful day for all that "hard work". Some garden in now, ready for more. We need rain again.

Yea, Colin,I got it,I have #2 "N" in running order this winter, and "itchin" to give her a try,no she isnt a full restore, just got her going, she has her work clothes on,and probably will for a well,as she is way down the list for paintin.Need to get her fully operational.

Hey Colin,
Don't mean to rub it in, but, I disked 1/4 acre Saturday that I had plowed last fall. Gettin' ready for sugar snap peas, then potatoes. I use my '49 8N year round though. It hardly ever snows in middle Tennessee. I'm heading for the Tennessee River Thursday to go after white bass below the damn. Dafodils, crocus, and dandylions blooming hear. Spring peepers raisin' a fuss. Hope you get spring soon, friend.

Hey Colin,
If the fever gets too bad give me a call. I've got both of mine down here this winter and when the temps get above freezing I'm apt to take one for a spin. Got this route that I like to take - along the CP RR here in NordEast. Signs say no tresspassing but when they see an old tractor puttering along they just smile and wave. Pick a warm day and I'll invite Kenny along. I chide him for not excercising his Select O Speed often enough.

Had the spring itch for over a month now... Been scratching it by machinery shopping. (no buying yet... still looking) Went to a crossroads town east of Appleton last Friday to look at a s/p windrower, planning on heading to Caledonia MN next week to look at a pull-type mo/co.

What part of SC you from Jim. I hope to move down that way in a few years. I am undecided I may go down to Ga both would be great places to live. Wife wants to get something an hr to hr1/2 from the beach( Myrtle). I sure could go for a little warmer winters

5 to 8 inches forecast for us, beginning tonight. Rather like the snow, but I'm starting to get whacky enough that I might try planting something in it.

Colin

Bruce,

Our seeds have arrived, and the onions will get seeded this weekend. In garden flats indoors.

Enjoy your planting! How hard are artichokes to grow in pots? I'm not a fan of them as food, but they are pretty, and my wife loves to eat them. She's been toying with the idea of potting one.

Colin

Did you get much precipitation over the winter?

Here in SE Minnesota we're still below average. It's been a much better season out west where the farm is.

Colin

Sounds like a good reason to get out and get the winter cramps out of one's legs.

Good luck with the machinery hunting.

Colin
