Sputtering

So, my 8n sputters when driving, either under a load or not. Front mount distributior. Mechanic changed coil, it was dead and put points rotor etc and new plugs. When I was loading it on trailer it was sputtering, hesitating so he eliminated the resistor said it didn’t say if coil had resistor or not on box. 12 volt system. Tractor was completely restored a few years back, always had that slight hesitation on throttle up Arb was new during restoration. Any ideas? My mechanic knows his way around all of the old tractors, been working on them for 50 years so I definitely trust him.

If Arb was a typo, and you meant Carb. and it's one from the land of almost right, that may be your problem. Have you tried adjusting the main jet to see if changes anything? Did your mechanic take or suggest doing a compression check?

Yes, I did mean carburetor, and no, I haven’t tried messing with any of the adjustments and he didn’t suggest it. He just thought it might be the resistor if the coil has a built-in resistor, but it didn’t say so on the box so for the main Jet, do I turn the screw in or turn the screw out and roughly how much?

Also, I forgot to mention, the governor seems to be working perfect properly. Whatever you wanna call it. The spring on the outside of the governor is very tight. It’s not loose or slacking so I do not think it’s the governor either. Maybe it is like you said just the carburetor.

I forgot to mention. The front mount distributor needs that ballast resister whether it's 6 volt or 12 volt. If you leave it bypassed the coil and or points may not last long.

It runs great without an attachment behind it, just under load it bogs down. Didn’t try it till the other day. He’s on vacation now.

Does sputtering/ bog down go away if pull choke out about half way?
